INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 15, 2000
A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring the week of May 15 through 21, 2000, as "Working 2 Women's Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Working women comprise nearly half of the United 4 States labor force, with over 61 million women in the workplace; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Women in the work force face added burdens caused by 7 the demands of balancing family life with full-time jobs, 8 demands which include child rearing and caring for dependent 9 adult relatives; and 10 WHEREAS, A vast majority of households depend on the wages of 11 a working mother, and working families are often just one 12 paycheck away from hardship; and 13 WHEREAS, More than 35 years after the passage of the Equal 14 Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, women continue to 15 suffer the consequences of inequitable pay differentials; and 16 WHEREAS, Wage discrimination laws are poorly enforced, and 17 cases are extremely difficult to prove and win; and
1 WHEREAS, Fair pay and equity policies can be implemented 2 simply and without undue costs while enhancing the American 3 economy; and 4 WHEREAS, Government, business and labor leaders should make 5 efforts to find solutions to the special problems working women 6 face; and 7 WHEREAS, Women deserve recognition for the important 8 contributions they make in their workplaces and communities, and 9 it is necessary to increase public awareness of those 10 contributions; therefore be it 11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week 12 of May 15 through 21, 2000, as "Working Women's Awareness Week" 13 in Pennsylvania and honor all working women for the sacrifices 14 and burdens they face in today's job market as well as the 15 significant contributions they make in their workplaces and 16 communities.
