1Designating October 21, 2013, as "Biomedical Research Day" in
2Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The biomedical research community in the United
4States and especially in this Commonwealth is recognized as a
5world leader in discoveries which promote health and the
6treatment of disease; and

7WHEREAS, Virtually every major medical advance in the past
8century has depended upon biomedical research; and

9WHEREAS, These advances include the prevention and treatment
10of cancer, discoveries of vaccines for the prevention of
11measles, mumps, polio and hepatitis, and medications to treat
12high blood pressure, arthritis and mental illness, among many
13others; and

14WHEREAS, Biomedical research has helped increase the life

1span of people in the United States through the development of
2vaccines, antibiotics and anti-infective drugs; and

3WHEREAS, Biomedical research has contributed to the
4elimination of many epidemic diseases and has helped to prevent
5numerous childhood killers in the United States; and

6WHEREAS, Biomedical researchers are working diligently toward
7cures for Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, acquired immune
8deficiency syndrome (AIDS), cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, heart
9and lung diseases, mental illnesses, multiple sclerosis and
10countless other diseases affecting millions of people in the
11United States; and

12WHEREAS, Biomedical research has contributed to the health
13and well-being of animals through vaccines and has helped the
14prospects of endangered species by reducing diseases and
15promoting reproduction; and

16WHEREAS, Biomedical research offers the best hope for new
17breakthroughs in disease detection and treatment; and

18WHEREAS, The biomedical research community in this
19Commonwealth and throughout the United States is recognized as
20the world leader in discovering and developing new knowledge and
21ideas that promote better health and the treatment of disease;
22therefore be it

23RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
2421, 2013, as "Biomedical Research Day" in Pennsylvania in
25recognition of the biomedical research community and its service
26to this Commonwealth.
