        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           DECEMBER 15, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating February 6, 2004, as "Give Kids A Smile Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania, congratulating the Pennsylvania Dental
     3     Association for its involvement in this national program, and
     4     thanking dentists for volunteering their time to provide
     5     needed dental care.

     6     WHEREAS, Access to dental care for children is a vital
     7  element of overall health care and development; and
     8     WHEREAS, Dental caries, more commonly known as tooth decay,
     9  is the most chronic childhood disease; and
    10     WHEREAS, Untreated tooth decay results in thousands of
    11  children experiencing poor eating and sleeping patterns,
    12  suffering decreased attention spans at school and being unable
    13  to smile; and


     1     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania dentists participating in the Give Kids
     2  A Smile program remind us about the need to end untreated
     3  childhood dental disease; and
     4     WHEREAS, Nationally the Give Kids A Smile program treated an
     5  estimated 1 million children on February 21, 2003, at
     6  approximately 5,000 locations in all 50 states; therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
     8  February 6, 2004, as "Give Kids A Smile Day," congratulate the
     9  Pennsylvania Dental Association for participating in the program
    10  on their efforts to improve access to dental care for children
    11  and thank the dentists who are volunteering their time and
    12  bringing a smile to hundreds of children in this Commonwealth.
