        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 11, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 7, 2002, as "Stand Up for Rural Pennsylvania
     2     Day."

     3     WHEREAS, One-fifth of America's population lives in rural
     4  areas; and
     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest rural
     6  populations in the nation; and
     7     WHEREAS, The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC),
     8  the nation's leading nonprofit community development
     9  organization, through its RURAL LISC component, is coordinating
    10  a national "Stand Up for Rural America" coalition to help rural
    11  community developers gain resources and policy support; and
    12     WHEREAS, RURAL LISC, through financial support from the PEW


     1  Charitable Trusts, has committed $18.5 million in funding to
     2  eight community development corporations to develop better
     3  housing, job facilities and communities in rural Pennsylvania
     4  over the next five years; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Center for Rural Pennsylvania, a legislative
     6  service agency of the General Assembly, is serving on the LISC
     7  Rural Pennsylvania Initiative Steering Committee to assist in
     8  the development and implementation of this project; and
     9     WHEREAS, Nationwide, May 7, 2002, has been chosen as the day
    10  to celebrate rural America and the accomplishments of the rural
    11  coalition; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives shall hereby
    13  designate May 7, 2002, as "Stand Up for Rural Pennsylvania Day."
