A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the life and extending condolences for the supreme 2 sacrifice of Corporal Gennaro Pellegrini, Jr., Pennsylvania 3 National Guard Company A, 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry 4 Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, who tragically lost his 5 life while in the service of his country near Bayji, Iraq, on 6 August 9, 2005. 7 WHEREAS, Corporal Gennaro Pellegrini, Jr., a native of 8 Philadelphia, was born on November 23, 1973, and grew up in the 9 Port Richmond section of the city; and 10 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini joined the Philadelphia Police 11 Department in 2001, serving in the 26th Police District, and,
1 the son of a police officer, he inherited his father's badge 2 number, 3722; and 3 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini, a Golden Gloves champion in 1997 4 and winner of several amateur and professional boxing matches, 5 earned the nickname "One Punch" from his fellow officers when he 6 subdued a violent suspect with just one blow, a knockout punch; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army 9 National Guard and was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 10 111th Infantry Regiment on April 25, 1998, as an 11B 11 Infantryman; and 12 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini completed basic training and 13 advanced infantry training at Fort Benning, Georgia, on December 14 18, 1998, displaying natural leadership ability that earned him 15 the respect of his peers and the confidence of his superiors, 16 and was promoted to Fire Team Leader of his platoon; and 17 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini was mobilized on June 28, 2004, in 18 support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit charged with 19 performing stability and support operations in the Bayji area of 20 Iraq; and 21 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini died tragically from injuries 22 received while on a routine night patrol on August 9, 2005; the 23 Humvee in which he was riding hit a roadside bomb and his unit 24 came under small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenade attack 25 from insurgents; and 26 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini was one of five servicepersons 27 killed in the incident, four of whom were from southeastern 28 Pennsylvania; and 29 WHEREAS, Cpl. Pellegrini, beloved son of Edith and Gennaro 30 Pellegrini, Sr., and brother of Dana Marie and Kimberly Ann, was 20050H0528R3190 - 2 -
1 courageously serving his country and Operation Iraqi Freedom at 2 the time of his death; and 3 WHEREAS, Family and friends mourn the tragic loss of this 4 young man and his indomitable courage, good humor, enduring 5 spirit, capacity to love and exemplary record of service; and 6 WHEREAS, An outstanding example of this young man's character 7 was his campaign to provide information about the children of 8 Iraq to Philadelphia schoolchildren; as a result of these 9 letters, 300 pairs of flip-flops were collected in Philadelphia 10 schools and sent to his unit in Iraq which, in turn, distributed 11 them to Iraqi children; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life 13 and extend condolences for the supreme sacrifice of Cpl. Gennaro 14 Pellegrini, Jr., who died on August 9, 2005, in Iraq while in 15 the courageous service of his country; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 17 Mr. and Mrs. Gennaro Pellegrini, Sr., of Philadelphia, 18 Pennsylvania.
