A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Lost Boys of Sudan for their tireless courage and

2

pioneering efforts in raising awareness and working toward

3

ending 21st Century slavery in their homeland of Sudan and

4

around the world.

5

WHEREAS, The Lost Boys of Sudan were forced to flee their

6

homes as children after the murder of their parents, the

7

destruction of their villages and the capture and sale of

8

relatives and siblings into slavery by government and other

9

Islamic forces from Northern Sudan; and

10

WHEREAS, The Lost Boys were forced to walk thousands of miles

11

to reach safety in refugee camps, first in Ethiopia and then

12

later in Kenya; and

13

WHEREAS, Many of the Lost Boys, some as young as five years

14

of age and none older than 13 years of age, were either killed

on their trek to freedom by hostile armed forces, lions or

2

crocodiles or perished from starvation; and

3

WHEREAS, Only 10,000 of the estimated original 30,000 Lost

4

Boys of Sudan survived the death-defying pilgrimage to freedom;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, Many of the Lost Boys of Sudan were granted

7

permission to immigrate to the United States where they have

8

obtained jobs and educations and have become productive members

9

of American society; and

10

WHEREAS, Despite their successful integration in the United

11

States, the Lost Boys of Sudan continue their efforts to assist

12

their people still struggling to survive in Southern Sudan; and

13

WHEREAS, The Lost Boys of Sudan have in particular devoted

14

themselves to fighting the ongoing evil of the slave trade,

15

which continues to be widespread in Southern Sudan; and

16

WHEREAS, To continue these efforts, the Lost Boys of Sudan

17

have joined together to establish a nonprofit group, known as

18

Lost Boys Rebuilding Southern Sudan, which has helped to

19

transform the lives of thousands of Lost Boys; and

20

WHEREAS, Lost Boys Rebuilding Southern Sudan continues the

21

fight to suppress and end slavery in Southern Sudan and the Horn

22

of Africa; therefore, be it

23

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Lost

24

Boys of Sudan for their tireless courage and pioneering efforts

25

in raising awareness and working toward ending 21st Century

26

slavery in their homeland of Sudan and around the world.
