| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the historic impact and tremendous accomplishments |
2 | of the 1925 Pottsville Maroons football team, appreciating |
3 | the significant advancements and innovations made by the team |
4 | in the early years of the National Football League and |
5 | designating the month of December 2009 as "Pottsville Maroons |
6 | Month" in Pennsylvania. |
7 | WHEREAS, The Pottsville Maroons were universally regarded as |
8 | the best football team in the world in 1925 following a National |
9 | Football League (NFL) record of 10-2 and the defeat of a team of |
10 | University of Notre Dame All Stars, which included the famed |
11 | Four Horsemen; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Pottsville Maroons were NFL innovators who |
13 | helped legitimize the league and turned this Commonwealth into a |
14 | true football powerhouse; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The Pottsville Maroons were denied their legacy as |
16 | one of the greatest and most pioneering football teams in |
17 | history; and |
18 | WHEREAS, This Commonwealth stands behind the Pottsville |

1 | Maroons as a symbol of the rich history of coal region football |
2 | with incredible men who, through acts of selflessness, |
3 | galvanized the concept of team for the upstart NFL, as well as |
4 | generations of great teams that followed; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The cause of the Pottsville Maroons has gained |
6 | renewed momentum and a national voice on the recent publication |
7 | of the book Breaker Boys: The NFL's Greatest Team and the Stolen |
8 | 1925 Championship by David Fleming; therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
10 | historic impact and tremendous accomplishments of the 1925 |
11 | Pottsville Maroons football team and appreciate the significant |
12 | advancements and innovations made by the team in the early years |
13 | of the National Football League; and be it further |
14 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the |
15 | month of December 2009 as "Pottsville Maroons Month" in |
16 | Pennsylvania. |
