        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 8, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing Butler County and its Washington 1753 Commemoration
     2     Committee for their hard work and efforts to call attention
     3     to an important event in Pennsylvania history.

     4     WHEREAS, In 1753 Major George Washington who was 21 years of
     5  age left his home in Virginia and traveled hundreds of miles
     6  through Indian-occupied wilderness to deliver a diplomatic
     7  message to the French military encampment at Fort Le Boeuf,
     8  south of Lake Erie, ordering the French to leave the Ohio River
     9  Valley region; and
    10     WHEREAS, The French refused to leave, causing Major
    11  Washington to embark on a perilous return trip to take the news
    12  to Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie in January 1754; and
    13     WHEREAS, This incident was one of the final events leading up

     1  to the French and Indian War, a pivotal conflict in the history
     2  of the American colonies that helped shape the character of
     3  George Washington and prepare him for the many challenges he
     4  would face in the future as Commander of the Continental Army
     5  and the first President of the United States; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Washington 1753 Commemoration Committee was
     7  established in 2000 by Butler County President Judge Martin J.
     8  O'Brien and the Butler County commissioners to commemorate
     9  Washington's historic mission; and
    10     WHEREAS, The committee installed signs marking Washington's
    11  route through Butler County and dedicated the trail in 2003, the
    12  250th anniversary of Washington's mission; and
    13     WHEREAS, The committee's further activities include plans to
    14  produce brochures in cooperation with the county tourist
    15  promotion agency and install interpretive markers at several key
    16  portions of Washington's trail in Butler County; and
    17     WHEREAS, The committee's work has set an example for other
    18  counties along Washington's route to follow and install similar
    19  signs in their counties; therefore be it
    20     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize Butler
    21  County and its Washington 1753 Commemoration Committee for their
    22  hard work and efforts to call attention to an important event in
    23  Pennsylvania history.
