A RESOLUTION
1 Supporting, demonstrating appreciation for and congratulating
2 the Boy Scouts of America for the fine work the outstanding
3 organization performs on behalf of the youth of our country.
4 WHEREAS, The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to teach
5 boys skills and moral and ethical values through community
6 service, a challenging outdoor program and by teaching self-
7 respect, respect for nature and respect for other people; and
8 WHEREAS, The values of the Boy Scouts of America are
9 reflected in the Scout Oath and Scout Law; and
10 WHEREAS, The Scout Oath summarizes Boy Scout values as
1 follows:
2 On my honor I will do my best
3 To do my duty to God and my country
4 and to obey the Scout Law;
5 To help other people at all times;
6 To keep myself physically strong,
7 mentally awake, and morally straight;
8 and
9 WHEREAS, The Scout Law requires that a scout be trustworthy,
10 loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful,
11 thrifty, brave, clean and reverent; and
12 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has selected its
13 scoutmasters and other leaders on the basis of the highest
14 standards because strong leaders and positive role models are
15 important to the healthy development of youth; and
16 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has utilized a merit badge
17 program which enables scouts to explore and earn recognition in
18 more than 100 fields of skill, including such popular activities
19 as camping, cooking, first aid, swimming, citizenship, canoeing,
20 firemanship, home repairs, lifesaving and safety; and
21 WHEREAS, Scouts engage in a wide range of community service
22 activities, including such activities as collecting food,
23 visiting nursing homes and hospitals and recycling; and
24 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America's commitment to public
25 service is reflected in its goal of committing each scout to 12
26 hours of community service each year for a total of 200 million
27 community service hours through the end of 2000; and
28 WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has served more than 100
29 million members and their families throughout its more than 90-
30 year history; and

1 WHEREAS, The appeal of the Boy Scouts of America is evident
2 from the fact that it consists of more than 90,000 charter
3 organizations, over 3 million youth members and more than 1.2
4 million adult volunteers in a variety of programs, including the
5 Tiger Cubs, the Cub Scouts, the Webelos Scouts, the Boy Scouts
6 of America , the Ventures and the Varsity Scouts; therefore be
7 it
8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend its
9 support, appreciation and congratulations to the Boy Scouts of
10 America for the fine work this outstanding organization performs
11 on behalf of the youth of our country; and be it further
12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
13 Roy L. Williams, Chief Scout Executive.
