INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 15, 2004
A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring Potter County on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. 2 WHEREAS, The boundaries of Potter County were established and 3 the county was created from territory in Lycoming County by an 4 act of the State Legislature of March 26, 1804; and 5 WHEREAS, This event occurred 200 years ago this month; and 6 WHEREAS, Since March 11, 1807, by another act of the General 7 Assembly, Coudersport has served as the county seat of Potter 8 County; and 9 WHEREAS, Originally joined with McKean County as a 10 consolidated judicial district, Potter County has been a
1 separate and independent judicial district since September 1, 2 1835; and 3 WHEREAS, Potter County has a rich heritage and history and 4 has played an important role in this Commonwealth as one of the 5 pivotal northern tier counties; and 6 WHEREAS, The Underground Railroad passed through Potter 7 County, and every able-bodied man in the county served in the 8 Civil War, a record said to not be equaled by any other county 9 in the North or South; and 10 WHEREAS, In the 1800s, tanning and timbering were the two big 11 economic factors in the county, and today's present industries 12 include agriculture and the manufacturing of dairy products, 13 toys, hosiery, rubber goods, tanned goods, lumber and millwork, 14 railroad cars, gloves, radio parts, and pulp and paper; and 15 WHEREAS, County residents value education, religious freedom 16 and conservation of the county's abundant natural resources and 17 have been constant stewards of these values; therefore be it 18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Potter 19 County on its 200th anniversary.
