        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 5, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the significant contributions to the history and
     2     economic growth of this Commonwealth that have been made by
     3     coal miners and observing Saturday, June 15, 2002, as "Coal
     4     Miners' Memorial Day."

     5     WHEREAS, Coal mining not only has a major place in the
     6  history of this Commonwealth but also has contributed greatly to
     7  its economic growth; and
     8     WHEREAS, There are countless stories of sacrifice, loyalty
     9  and hard work demonstrated throughout the 19th and 20th
    10  centuries by the legendary coal miners who spent long, dark
    11  hours in the mines and the families who awaited their daily
    12  return from work; and


     1     WHEREAS, There was nothing more dreaded in a coal mining town
     2  than the sound of the chaos of a mine cave-in, and nothing more
     3  poignant than the sobs of the wives and children whose loved
     4  ones were trapped below; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation is an
     6  organization which endeavors to preserve the legends and history
     7  of the coal mining industry in this Commonwealth, and for the
     8  past several years it has been engaged in the building of the
     9  Miners' Memorial Wall in Windber, where the Berwind Mining
    10  Corporation was headquartered; and
    11     WHEREAS, This wall was dedicated in Windber on June 16, 2001,
    12  a day which the foundation has set aside as "Coal Miners'
    13  Memorial Day"; and
    14     WHEREAS, It is fitting that the citizens of this Commonwealth
    15  recognize the significant contributions to the history and
    16  economic growth of this Commonwealth that have been made by coal
    17  miners and observe Saturday, June 15, 2002, as "Coal Miners'
    18  Memorial Day"; therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    20  significant contributions to the history and economic growth of
    21  this Commonwealth that have been made by coal miners and observe
    22  Saturday, June 15, 2002, as "Coal Miners' Memorial Day."
