A RESOLUTION

Recognizing February 5, 2010, as "Wear Red Day" in Pennsylvania

2

to raise awareness about the risks to women from

3

cardiovascular disease.

4

WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are this nation's leading

5

cause of death, and stroke is the third leading cause of death;

6

and

7

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of nearly

8

460,000 American females each year, approximately one death per

9

minute; and

10

WHEREAS, Each year, 53% of all deaths due to cardiovascular

11

disease and 61% of stroke deaths occur in females, and many

12

women die each year because they are unaware that heart disease

13

is the number one killer of woman; and

WHEREAS, Nearly as many women die of heart disease, stroke

2

and all other cardiovascular diseases than the next five leading

3

causes of death combined, including all cancers, but only 21% of

4

women consider cardiovascular disease their greatest health

5

risk; and

6

WHEREAS, In 2010, the direct and indirect cost of

7

cardiovascular diseases in the United States, including stroke,

8

is estimated to be $503.2 billion; and

9

WHEREAS, February is designated as American Heart Month; and

10

WHEREAS, Go Red For Women® is the American Heart

11

Association's national call to increase awareness about heart

12

disease, the leading cause of death for women, and to inspire

13

women to take charge of their heart health; and

14

WHEREAS, All women should learn their own personal risks for

15

heart disease, using tools such as the American Heart

16

Association's Go Red For Women® Heart CheckUp, Go Red For Women®

17

Better U and by talking to their health care providers; and

18

WHEREAS, Making the right choices relating to proper

19

nutrition, physical activity and other healthy lifestyle choices

20

are essential to living a heart-healthy life; and

21

WHEREAS, By choosing to speak up about heart disease, all

22

citizens can save lives using the power of their own voices;

23

therefore be it

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize

25

February 5, 2010, as "Wear Red Day" in Pennsylvania and urge all

26

citizens to show their support for women and the fight against

27

heart disease by commemorating this day by the wearing of the

28

color red and by increasing their awareness about the risks of

29

cardiovascular disease.
