        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 16, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring Tioga County on its 200th anniversary.

     2     WHEREAS, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, was established by act
     3  of the General Assembly on March 26, 1804; and
     4     WHEREAS, Tioga County was originally populated by Yankee
     5  settlers who claimed ownership rights from the State of
     6  Connecticut; and
     7     WHEREAS, The Decree of Trenton in 1782 awarded the territory
     8  to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and three years later the
     9  Commonwealth commenced the sale of lands acquired under the
    10  treaty; and

     1     WHEREAS, In 1784 Tioga County was ceded by the Native
     2  Americans under the Treaty of Fort Stanwix; and
     3     WHEREAS, During the 1790s and early 1800s the first roads
     4  were constructed through Tioga County for transportation and
     5  trade, and they served as the main arteries between central
     6  Pennsylvania and the State of New York; and
     7     WHEREAS, The formation of the roads led to the discovery of
     8  coal near Blossburg and opened the area to further settlement;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, Wellsboro, incorporated as a town in 1806, became
    11  the county seat and was the first town to be incorporated as a
    12  borough in the county in 1830; and
    13     WHEREAS, The main industry in Tioga County from its beginning
    14  was agriculture, followed by the lumber industry during the 19th
    15  century; and
    16     WHEREAS, Coal mining was a principal industry, and the
    17  discovery of gas in 1930 provided another major industry for the
    18  county; and
    19     WHEREAS, The population of Tioga County reached its peak
    20  about 1890 at 54,000 but declined with the depletion of lumber
    21  and coal until 1930 when the population began to increase once
    22  again; and
    23     WHEREAS, Tioga County is renowned for its natural resources,
    24  including a steep gorge which extends for 50 miles and which is
    25  nearly 1,000 feet deep in places, known as the Grand Canyon of
    26  Pennsylvania; and
    27     WHEREAS, Some of the best deer and turkey hunting in this
    28  Commonwealth occurs in Tioga County; and
    29     WHEREAS, During 2004 Tioga County celebrates the bicentennial
    30  of its founding; therefore be it

     1     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Tioga
     2  County on its 200th anniversary.
