A RESOLUTION 1 Noting with great sadness the passing of Officer Jose M. Ortiz. 2 WHEREAS, Officer Jose M. Ortiz of the Philadelphia Police 3 Department's 25th District passed away on Thursday, September 4 21, 2000, after falling victim to critical injuries suffered in 5 the line of duty; and 6 WHEREAS, Officer Ortiz was a 29-year-old, young and vivacious 7 family man, devoted husband to wife Theresa and loving father to 8 three-year-old daughter Nicole; and 9 WHEREAS, Officer Jose Ortiz served as an inspiration to 10 others for his ability to surpass obstacles and overcome 11 negative stereotypes that may exist about his culture; and 12 WHEREAS, Officer Ortiz is the first officer since 1997 to die 13 in the line of duty in the City of Philadelphia; and 14 WHEREAS, Officer Ortiz constantly gave back to his community 15 by giving of his own time, off duty, for community events and 16 volunteering in his neighborhood; and 17 WHEREAS, The residents of Officer Ortiz's community thought
1 of him as someone who was accessible, likeable and had an honest 2 desire to serve his community; and 3 WHEREAS, Officer Ortiz will always be remembered as a 4 husband, father and a man who had grown up in the area he had 5 been assigned to protect and serve; and 6 WHEREAS, Officer Ortiz's death will not be in vain because of 7 his decision to be an organ donor; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives note with great 9 sadness the untimely passing of Jose M. Ortiz and recognize him 10 as a promising young police officer who died tragically in the 11 performance of his duty; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 13 the family of Officer Jose M.
