INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 19, 2002
A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring June 20, 2002, as "National Service Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Efforts have begun on a grass-roots campaign to 4 encourage local communities throughout this great country to 5 join them in commemorating "National Service Day"; and 6 WHEREAS, National service entails more than volunteerism; and 7 WHEREAS, National service encompasses a compact between a 8 community and its residents to engage in a communally beneficial 9 relationship; and 10 WHEREAS, National service promotes the ethic of mutual 11 responsibility in which government has an obligation to create 12 opportunities for its citizens, with citizens having an 13 obligation to give something back; and 14 WHEREAS, National service strengthens the bonds of 15 citizenship and patriotism; and 16 WHEREAS, National service is in keeping with President Andrew 17 Jackson's credo of "equal opportunity for all, special privilege
1 for none" and President John F. Kennedy's challenge to "Ask not 2 what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your 3 country"; and 4 WHEREAS, National service will nourish another generation of 5 people who understand that being a citizen entails serving 6 others; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare June 20, 8 2002, as "National Service Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it 9 further 10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives call upon the 11 people of this Commonwealth to participate in national service 12 in order to foster a stronger bond between the Government and 13 residents of this Commonwealth.
