A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring November 4, 2000, as "Ida Tarbell Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Ida Minerva Tarbell was born on November 5, 1857, in 4 a log home on her maternal grandfather's farm located in 5 northwest Pennsylvania; and 6 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell was raised in Titusville during the 7 1860s when the oil industry was developing and flourishing; and 8 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell was one of the first women to enter 9 Allegheny College in the fall of 1876; and 10 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell authored 23 major books, including "The 11 History of the Standard Oil Company" and nine books about 12 Abraham Lincoln; and 13 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell was a historian and journalist in search 14 of documented facts and not the advocate of a cause or a 15 reformer; and 16 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell, arguably the premier journalist of her 17 generation, was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame
1 in Seneca Falls, New York, on October 7, 2000; and 2 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell pioneered historical research and set 3 standards which professionals today strive to emulate; and 4 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell died of pneumonia on January 6, 1944, 5 and was buried at the family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery in 6 Titusville; and 7 WHEREAS, Ida Tarbell's passion for truth and knowledge is an 8 enduring legacy for the citizens of this Commonwealth and 9 deserves special recognition; therefore be it 10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare November 11 4, 2000, as "Ida Tarbell Day" in Pennsylvania.
