        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, OCTOBER 31, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Encouraging participation in the "Hunters Sharing the Harvest"
     2     program.

     3     WHEREAS, The "Hunters Sharing the Harvest" program has been
     4  providing venison to area community food banks to benefit needy
     5  citizens throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and
     6     WHEREAS, The overabundance of deer in certain regions of this
     7  Commonwealth has impacted our agricultural community, forest
     8  industry, natural biodiversity and overall quality of life for
     9  many citizens; and
    10     WHEREAS, This unique program, now in its tenth year, has
    11  provided annually over 85,000 pounds of this nutritious, high
    12  protein meat to the less fortunate through community food banks

     1  and now is calling on all Pennsylvanians to assist in this
     2  program; and
     3     WHEREAS, Much assistance is needed to provide funds to offset
     4  the processing costs for venison and further extend delivery
     5  systems to more quickly and efficiently reach needy recipients;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Department
     8  of Agriculture have supported these efforts and now join with
     9  all program partners including Safari Club International
    10  (Pennsylvania chapters), United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania,
    11  Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, Pennsylvania Association of Regional
    12  Food Banks and Pennsylvania Association of Meat Processors in
    13  collaboration with the respected "Farmers and Hunters Feeding
    14  the Hungry" in encouraging hunters to share their harvest
    15  through Pennsylvania "Hunters Sharing the Harvest" program;
    16  therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
    18  citizens of this Commonwealth and especially individuals and
    19  groups that are most concerned in supporting "Hunters Sharing
    20  the Harvest" and extend its appreciation to the Department of
    21  Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Game Commission for joining in
    22  this challenge to distribute this valuable component of our
    23  wildlife resources; and be it further
    24     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
    25  Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Game Commission
    26  to provide information about donating big game and other
    27  lawfully taken wildlife to food banks, homeless shelters and
    28  meat processors throughout this Commonwealth and any
    29  individuals, nonprofit agencies, charitable organizations and
    30  businesses requesting this information.
