A RESOLUTION

Recognizing March 8, 2010, as "International Women's Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, March 8 is a day set aside around the world to

4

highlight accomplishments in women's universal fight for

5

equality, to raise awareness regarding women's issues and to

6

celebrate together the victories and achievements of women; and

7

WHEREAS, "International Women's Day" first emerged from

8

activities of labor movements at the turn of the 20th century in

9

North America and across Europe; and

10

WHEREAS, "International Women's Day" is recognized as an

11

official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus,

12

Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia,

13

Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam where men honor

their mothers, wives, girlfriends and colleagues with flowers

2

and small gifts; and

3

WHEREAS, The United Nations has designated this year's

4

"International Women's Day" theme to be "Equal rights, equal

5

opportunities: Progress for all"; and

6

WHEREAS, There are more than three billion women in the

7

world, representing 51% of the world's population; and

8

WHEREAS, Women worldwide are participating in the world of

9

diplomacy and politics, contributing to the growth of economies

10

and improving the quality of the lives of their families,

11

communities and nations; and

12

WHEREAS, Women have been leaders, not only in securing the

13

rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the

14

abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial

15

labor movement, the civil rights movement and the peace

16

movement, all of which created a more fair and just society for

17

all; and

18

WHEREAS, Since the formation of the American colonies, women

19

in this Commonwealth have been in the forefront of each new

20

generation and its advancements; and

21

WHEREAS, Twenty-seven women currently hold a position in the

22

House of Representatives, comprising 13% of its membership; and

23

WHEREAS, These women and others like them exemplify

24

leadership, steadfastness and creativity in the progress of the

25

United States and this Commonwealth into the 21st century;

26

therefore be it

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March

28

8, 2010, as "International Women's Day" in Pennsylvania, and

29

call upon its residents to observe this day with appropriate

30

programs and activities.
