        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 26, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2002 as "Fire Prevention Month"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Nationwide, 85% of fire deaths occur in the home;
     4  and
     5     WHEREAS, Fires in one-family and two-family dwellings cause
     6  72% of fire deaths; and
     7     WHEREAS, In the past year there were 368,000 home fires in
     8  the United States, resulting in 3,420 deaths, 16,975 injuries


     1  and $5.5 billion in direct property damage; and
     2     WHEREAS, Smoke and poisonous gases, the leading causes of
     3  fire deaths, often kill before flames kill; and
     4     WHEREAS, The fire services of this Commonwealth are dedicated
     5  to protecting life and property from the devastating effects of
     6  fire; and
     7     WHEREAS, Private citizens, businesses, schools, service clubs
     8  and other organizations often cooperate in fire safety and
     9  prevention efforts; and
    10     WHEREAS, Teamwork is an integral and necessary component of
    11  preventing fires and fire-related deaths and injuries; and
    12     WHEREAS, This year's theme, "Team Up for Fire Safety,"
    13  emphasizes the importance of teamwork in preventing fires; and
    14     WHEREAS, "Fire Prevention Month" commemorates the devastating
    15  Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and educates the public about the
    16  necessary steps to prevent fires; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives shall hereby
    18  designate the month of October 2002 as "Fire Prevention Month"
    19  in Pennsylvania and call upon the people of this Commonwealth to
    20  participate in fire prevention activities at home, work and
    21  school and follow fire safety precautions to prevent fires and
    22  avert fire-related deaths and injuries.
