        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION, FEBRUARY 13, 2001

                                     AN ACT

     1  Requiring the Department of Education to request all school
     2     districts to begin each school day with prayer or a short
     3     period of meditation.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6  Section 1.  Daily opening exercises in public schools.
     7     The Secretary of Education shall request that school
     8  districts begin each school day with prayer or readings from
     9  spiritual documents such as the Bible, the Torah and the Koran
    10  or a short period of meditation. School districts may invite
    11  community religious leaders to assist in daily opening
    12  exercises.
    13  Section 2.  Effective date.
    14     This act shall take effect immediately.
