INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 7, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of May 2008 as "Older Pennsylvanians 2 Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, May has traditionally been recognized as "Older 4 Americans Month" in the United States, a month set aside both to 5 consider the special and continuing needs of our older citizens 6 and to alert them to the existence of services and benefits 7 available to them; and 8 WHEREAS, The Administration on Aging within the Department of 9 Health and Human Services has announced that the theme for Older 10 Americans Month, 2008 is "Working Together for Strong, Healthy
1 and Supportive Communities"; and 2 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize that older citizens 3 possess a wealth of experience, talent and wisdom and a 4 willingness to share them; and 5 WHEREAS, Older citizens highly value their freedom and 6 independence and want to remain in their homes and communities 7 as active and contributing citizens; and 8 WHEREAS, Over the next ten years, the largest demographic 9 change will be a 50% increase in the number of individuals who 10 are at least 85 years of age, thereby prompting increasing 11 demand for health care and long-term care services; and 12 WHEREAS, In past years during the month of May, groups such 13 as the American Association of Retired Persons and the 14 Pennsylvania Council on Aging have provided programs designed to 15 educate the general public about the special housing, health 16 care and income security needs of the 2.4 million Pennsylvanians 17 who are at least 60 years of age; and 18 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to inform older citizens of the 19 wide variety of programs and services available to them, 20 including, but not limited to, PACE and PACENET, the Property 21 Tax and Rent Rebate Program, the fixed route and shared-ride 22 transportation programs and the numerous programs and services 23 provided through the network of 52 local area agencies on aging; 24 therefore be it 25 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 26 month of May 2008 as "Older Pennsylvanians Month" in 27 Pennsylvania.
