           OCTOBER 8, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Joining in the observance of the Great American Smokeout on
     2     November 21, 2002.

     3     WHEREAS, It has become common knowledge that cigarette
     4  smoking is damaging to health; and
     5     WHEREAS, Smoking has been implicated in cancers of the mouth,
     6  pharynx, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, cervix, kidney and
     7  bladder, and statistics reveal that each day nearly 3,000
     8  teenagers in the United States become regular smokers; and
     9     WHEREAS, During the past 24 years, millions of smokers have
    10  participated in the American Cancer Society's Great American
    11  Smokeout, a day on which smokers give up cigarettes and tobacco
    12  products for 24 hours; and
    13     WHEREAS, The focus of the Great American Smokeout has evolved

     1  from simply helping adults quit smoking to helping children and
     2  teenagers understand they should never start smoking in the
     3  first place; and
     4     WHEREAS, Thousands of these participants were residents of
     5  the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and
     6     WHEREAS, A substantial number of them gave up cigarettes for
     7  the day and many went on to give up the habit entirely; and
     8     WHEREAS, This demonstration of success suggests that the
     9  Great American Smokeout, while lighthearted in approach, has
    10  potential for improving the health of the people of this
    11  Commonwealth; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives join in the
    13  observance of the Great American Smokeout on November 21, 2002,
    14  and encourage all Pennsylvanians to do likewise.
