A RESOLUTION 1 Designating May 27, 2006, as "Rachel Carson Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Rachel Carson was born May 27, 1907, in Springdale, 4 Pennsylvania; and 5 WHEREAS, Rachel Carson and her colleagues, including those 6 from Pennsylvania, took a heroic and significant step on the 7 path toward awareness of the hazards of chemical pesticide use 8 and the advantages of alternatives in her book, "Silent Spring"; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, Continued development and use of chemical pesticides 11 instead of low-risk alternatives indicate that additional steps 12 along this path are warranted; and 13 WHEREAS, "Silent Spring" noted that the abundance, diversity
1 and quality of all life on earth may depend significantly on our 2 ability and willingness to travel this path; and 3 WHEREAS, Each of us can contribute to and take part in this 4 crucial journey; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 27, 6 2006, as "Rachel Carson Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage 7 residents of this Commonwealth to refrain from the use of 8 chemical pesticides and to explore low-risk alternative pest 9 management methods.
