           OCTOBER 15, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of March 2003 as "Endometriosis Awareness
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Endometriosis, a condition involving abnormal
     4  uterine cell growth, affects nearly 80 million teens and women
     5  worldwide; and
     6     WHEREAS, More than 5.5 million women in the United States
     7  suffer from endometriosis; and
     8     WHEREAS, Endometriosis affects more women than breast cancer
     9  does; and
    10     WHEREAS, Endometriosis can have a debilitating impact on a
    11  woman's life and her relationships, in some cases rendering her
    12  unable to work, to care for herself or her family or to follow

     1  her normal routine; and
     2     WHEREAS, Studies have shown an elevated risk of certain
     3  cancers and autoimmune diseases in endometriosis patients; and
     4     WHEREAS, Endometriosis is the leading cause of female
     5  infertility and hysterectomy; and
     6     WHEREAS, There is currently no definitive cure for
     7  endometriosis; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Endometriosis Research Center (ERC) is a
     9  nonprofit organization founded in 1997 to address the needs of
    10  the international community of individuals who suffer from
    11  endometriosis and to improve the quality of life for those with
    12  the disease through education and support programs; and
    13     WHEREAS, The ERC raises awareness about endometriosis
    14  throughout the medical and lay communities and raises funds to
    15  facilitate and promote existing research for effective
    16  treatments and ultimately a cure for endometriosis; and
    17     WHEREAS, Events and activities, including "ERC Casual Days,"
    18  are held annually during the month of March in celebration of
    19  ERC's anniversary; and
    20     WHEREAS, The goal of these events is to educate the general
    21  public about the significance of this disease, to support and
    22  assist women living with the disease and to raise funds for the
    23  organization's efforts; therefore be it
    24     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    25  month of March 2003 as "Endometriosis Awareness Month" in
    26  Pennsylvania.
