A RESOLUTION 1 Observing May 2, 2006, as "Edmund Bacon Day" in Pennsylvania, 2 commemorating the life of Edmund N. Bacon and his 3 contributions to the City of Philadelphia and recognizing the 4 Ed Bacon Foundation for preserving and strengthening the 5 vision and legacy of the legendary city planner. 6 WHEREAS, Edmund N. Bacon was born in Philadelphia on May 2, 7 1910, and died on October 14, 2005; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Bacon was educated in architecture at Cornell 9 University, where he designed the Love Park plaza in 1932, and 10 he studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Bacon worked as an architect in China and 12 Philadelphia and as a planner in Flint, Michigan, and became 13 director of the Philadelphia Housing Association upon returning 14 to Philadelphia in 1939; and 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Bacon's vision shaped much of modern downtown 16 Philadelphia, including Penn Center, Market East and Society 17 Hill; and
1 WHEREAS, In 1964 Mr. Bacon's face was on the cover of Time 2 Magazine, and in 1969 he was appointed by United States 3 President Johnson to serve as a member of the Citizens' Advisory 4 Committee on Environmental Quality; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Bacon's book "Design of Cities" is still 6 considered an important work on urban design; and 7 WHEREAS, After retiring from the City Planning Commission in 8 1970, Mr. Bacon served as vice president for the private 9 planning firm Mondev USA, taught at the University of Illinois 10 and the University of Pennsylvania and narrated a series of city 11 planning films; and 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Bacon received numerous honors, including the 13 American Institute of Planners Distinguished Service Award and 14 the Philadelphia Award; and 15 WHEREAS, The Ed Bacon Foundation has advanced Mr. Bacon's 16 work in planning, architecture, urban development and civic life 17 since its inception in November 2004; and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. Bacon actively asserted his vision for 19 Philadelphia's future throughout his life; therefore be it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives observe May 2, 21 2006, as "Edmund Bacon Day" in Pennsylvania to honor the life 22 accomplishments of Edmund Bacon.
