        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 24, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 1, 2006, as "Loyalty Day" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, The Department of Pennsylvania, Veterans of Foreign
     3  Wars of the United States, is conducting its annual "Loyalty
     4  Day" program on the grounds of the State Capitol on May 1, 2006;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, In 1958 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into
     7  law Public Law 85-529, which designates May 1 of each year as
     8  "Loyalty Day"; and
     9     WHEREAS, "Loyalty Day" is set aside as a special day for
    10  reaffirming loyalty to the United States and recognizing

     1  American freedom; and
     2     WHEREAS, The President of the United States annually issues a
     3  proclamation calling on officials to proudly display the flag of
     4  the United States on all Government buildings on this special
     5  day; and
     6     WHEREAS, Citizens and elected officials are encouraged to
     7  observe "Loyalty Day" in schools and other appropriate places;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, In the post-9/11 world, it is fitting that the
    10  citizens of this Commonwealth pause on "Loyalty Day" to reflect
    11  on the privileges of freedom, democracy and unmatched
    12  opportunity we enjoy in the United States; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 1,
    14  2006, as "Loyalty Day" in Pennsylvania, proudly joining the
    15  Department of Pennsylvania, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the
    16  United States, in its observance and commending the department
    17  for its continued service to our nation and this Commonwealth;
    18  and be it further
    19     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    20  the VFW State Commander on May 1, 2006, at the "Loyalty Day"
    21  program conducted by the Department of Pennsylvania, Veterans of
    22  Foreign Wars of the United States, on the grounds of the State
    23  Capitol.
