A RESOLUTION 1 Commending the Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Program of The 2 Pennsylvania State University on its 40th anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, In 1964, the Women's Athletic Program began at The 4 Pennsylvania State University and its field hockey team first 5 competed interscholastically on October 3, 1964; and 6 WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Women's Athletic Program at 7 The Pennsylvania State University has grown to include 14 8 varsity sports, and 400 women athletes and 47 head coaches and 9 assistant coaches participate annually in the program; and 10 WHEREAS, During the past 40 years, the Lady Lions have 11 attained national stature in these sports, especially since The 12 Pennsylvania State University joined the Big Ten Conference in
1 1991; and 2 WHEREAS, Women's teams at The Pennsylvania State University 3 have won 14 national championships, 23 Big Ten championships and 4 nine conference tournaments; they have won more than 20 5 individual national championships, and in tandem with The 6 Pennsylvania State University men's fencing team, women have 7 secured an additional nine national championships; and 8 WHEREAS, The Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program at The 9 Pennsylvania State University is committed to the highest 10 standards of the academic and athletic commitment of its 11 athletes; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the 13 Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program at The Pennsylvania 14 State University on its 40th anniversary.
