A RESOLUTION

 

1Memorializing the anniversary of the death of General Douglas
2MacArthur, a Five Star General of the United States Army who
3served from 1903 to 1964.

4WHEREAS, Douglas MacArthur passed away 50 years ago on April
55, 1964, at 84 years of age; and

6WHEREAS, General MacArthur was born in Little Rock, Arkansas,
7into a military family, where his father was stationed as a
8captain in the United States Army; and

9WHEREAS, General MacArthur graduated first in his class from
10the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1903; and

11WHEREAS, General MacArthur began his historic military career
12during the Occupation of Veracruz in 1914 and continued with
13great success in World War I, where he became a decorated
14officer, soon thereafter becoming the youngest general in the
15United States Army; and

1WHEREAS, General MacArthur was assigned to the Philippine
2Islands in 1922, where he eventually became the Chief Military
3Advisor to the Commonwealth Government of the Philippines; and

4WHEREAS, General MacArthur was brought out of retirement for
5World War II in 1941, when he became the Commanding General of
6the United States Army in the Far East; and

7WHEREAS, General MacArthur achieved the title of Supreme
8Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area; and

9WHEREAS, General MacArthur returned, as he promised, to the
10Philippines on October 20, 1944, at the beaches of Leyte, where
11he reclaimed the Philippine Islands from Japanese forces; and

12WHEREAS, General MacArthur accepted the unconditional
13surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945, on the USS Missouri,
14ending World War II, and oversaw the occupation of Japan until
151951; and

16WHEREAS, Throughout his career, General MacArthur was awarded
17the Medal of Honor, three Distinguished Service Crosses, five
18Army Distinguished Service Medals, a Navy Distinguished Service
19Medal, seven Silver Stars, a Distinguished Flying Cross, a
20Bronze Star, an Air Medal and two Purple Hearts; therefore be it

21RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives memorialize the
22anniversary of the death of General Douglas MacArthur, a Five
23Star General of the United States Army, who served from 1903 to
241964, and his enduring legacy.
