A RESOLUTION
1Designating April 22, 2014, as "Governor James Pollock
2Remembrance Day" in Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, James Pollock was a devoted public servant and great
4Pennsylvanian, having served as District Attorney for
5Northumberland County, President Judge of Pennsylvania's Eighth
6Judicial District and the 13th Governor of our Commonwealth; and
7WHEREAS, A native of Milton, Northumberland County, Governor
8Pollock served as Governor from 1855 through 1858; and
9WHEREAS, Governor Pollock signed the charter establishing The
10Pennsylvania State University and was a founding trustee of the
11university; and
12WHEREAS, From 1844 through 1849, Governor Pollock further
13served this Commonwealth and our nation by representing
14Pennsylvania's 13th Congressional District in the Congress of
15the United States; and
1WHEREAS, During that period, Governor Pollock advocated for
2the establishment of telegraph transmission and transcontinental
3railroad systems; and
4WHEREAS, Governor Pollock served as the Director of the
5United States Mint in Philadelphia from 1861 through 1866 and
6from 1869 through 1873; and
7WHEREAS, In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln urged Governor
8Pollock as Director of the United States Mint to craft a motto
9that would help reunite the country; and
10WHEREAS, Toward this end, Governor Pollock is credited with
11developing the motto "In God We Trust"; and
12WHEREAS, April 22, 2014, marks the 150th anniversary of the
13official adoption of the motto, which is still widely used by
14the United States Mint; and
15WHEREAS, Governor Pollock died on April 19, 1890, at 79 years
16of age; therefore be it
17RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April
1822, 2014, as "Governor James Pollock Remembrance Day" in
19Pennsylvania to honor the service and continuing legacy of
20former Governor James Pollock.
