        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 11, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing June 19, 2008, as "Thais Ridgeway Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania in honor of the accomplishments of Thais
     3     Ridgeway and other winners of the Congressional Award Gold
     4     Medal who are from Pennsylvania.

     5     WHEREAS, Thais Ridgeway, a junior at Bishop McDevitt High
     6  School in Harrisburg is the first Harrisburg native to be
     7  awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal; and
     8     WHEREAS, Miss Ridgeway's award will be presented on June 19,
     9  2008, by the Congress of the United States, and it exemplifies
    10  her service to others, her initiative and her achievements; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Congressional Award was established in 1979 by
    12  an act of Congress, and more than 6,500 awards have been earned,
    13  representing more than 1.5 million volunteer hours performed in
    14  community service across the United States; and
    15     WHEREAS, To earn either a bronze, silver or gold medal, young
    16  people must set and achieve goals in four areas: public service,
    17  personal development, physical fitness and exploration; and
    18     WHEREAS, Miss Ridgeway exceeded her goal by completing more


     1  than 400 hours in each of these areas to earn a gold medal;
     2  therefore be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize June
     4  19, 2008, as "Thais Ridgeway Day" in Pennsylvania in honor of
     5  her accomplishments and the accomplishments of other
     6  Pennsylvanians who have earned the Congressional Award Gold
     7  Medal.
