A RESOLUTION
Designating April 12, 2016, as "Equal Pay Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The 57th anniversary of the act of December 17, 1959
(P.L.1913, No.694), known as the Equal Pay Law, is being marked
during the year 2016; and
WHEREAS, Although Pennsylvania's Equal Pay Law was passed
more than five decades ago, women and their families continue to
suffer the consequences of unequal pay; and
WHEREAS, Women constitute more than 58% of the current work
force in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, In 2014, female full-time workers earned only 79
cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 21%;
and
WHEREAS, Many women in the work force today are the sole
breadwinners for their families, comprising more than half a

million households in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, While a greater number of women have obtained
higher-paying positions traditionally dominated by men, women as
a whole continue to work in lower-paying occupations, magnifying
the effects of gender-based wage disparities; and
WHEREAS, Earning a lower wage over the course of a career
damages women's financial security, reducing the amount of their
pensions and lowering their contributions to Social Security;
and
WHEREAS, Equal pay strengthens the security of today's
families and eases retirement costs, which in turn enhances
Pennsylvania's economy; and
WHEREAS, The date of April 12, 2016, symbolizes how far into
the next year the average American woman would have to work to
earn what the average American man has earned in the previous
year; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April
12, 2016, as "Equal Pay Day" in Pennsylvania in recognition of
the need to eliminate the gender gap in earnings by women and to
promote policies to ensure equal pay for all.
