| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the United Way as it celebrates the 125th anniversary |
2 | of its founding. |
3 | WHEREAS, In 2012, the United Way celebrates the 125th |
4 | anniversary of its founding; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The United Way was founded in Denver in 1887; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Today, United Way is the largest privately funded |
7 | nonprofit corporation in the nation and the world, with more |
8 | than 1,800 United Ways in 41 countries and territories; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The focus of United Way is identifying and resolving |
10 | pressing community issues, as well as making measurable changes |
11 | in the communities through partnerships with schools, government |
12 | agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, |
13 | community development corporations, voluntary and neighborhood |
14 | associations, the faith community and others; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The issues United Way focuses on are determined |
2 | locally because of the diversity of the communities served; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The United Way's overall framework, however, |
4 | includes education, income and health; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The United Way builds on community strengths and |
6 | assets, helps individuals and groups with specific community |
7 | interests, finds ways for them to contribute their time and |
8 | talents, supports direct-service programs and community-change |
9 | efforts and advocates public policy changes; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Millions of corporations and businesses partner with |
11 | United Way to address community needs; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Since 1946, the American Federation of Labor and the |
13 | Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and United Way of |
14 | America have enjoyed a cooperative relationship; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Nearly 40 years ago, the National Football League |
16 | (NFL) and the United Way established a partnership to increase |
17 | public awareness of service issues facing the country; and |
18 | WHEREAS, In addition to public service announcements in which |
19 | volunteer NFL players, coaches and owners appear, NFL players |
20 | support their local United Ways through personal appearances, |
21 | special programs and serving on United Way governing boards; and |
22 | WHEREAS, Both Pennsylvania NFL franchises, the Philadelphia |
23 | Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers, are strong United Way |
24 | supporters; and |
25 | WHEREAS, There are 63 United Way organizations in this |
26 | Commonwealth; and |
27 | WHEREAS, In 1908, Pennsylvania's first United Way was founded |
28 | in Pittsburgh; and |
29 | WHEREAS, The United Way organizations in this Commonwealth |
30 | advance the common good and improve communities across this |

1 | Commonwealth as places to live and do business through strategic |
2 | investments, initiatives, partnerships and advocacy; therefore |
3 | be it |
4 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the United |
5 | Way on the 125th anniversary of its founding and encourage all |
6 | residents of this Commonwealth to support the United Way. |
