A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of United States Army Sergeant Sean Michael

2

Durkin, 24, who paid the ultimate sacrifice on April 9, 2010,

3

as the result of injuries he received from an improvised

4

explosive device on March 27, 2010, in Afghanistan.

5

WHEREAS, Easton native, United States Army Sergeant Sean

6

Michael Durkin, died April 9, 2010, from wounds sustained on

7

March 27, 2010, while serving our nation in Afghanistan; and

8

WHEREAS, Sgt. Durkin was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th

9

Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Fort Carson,

10

Colorado, and had served a tour in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne

Division before being deployed as an army infantryman to

2

Afghanistan; and

3

WHEREAS, Sgt. Durkin lost both legs and two fingers when

4

enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive

5

device near Forward Operating Base Wilson, an attack that also

6

wounded two comrades; and

7

WHEREAS, Prior to being transported to Walter Reed Army

8

Hospital near Washington, DC, Sgt. Durkin was visited at a

9

hospital in Kabul and presented with a Purple Heart from

10

President Barack Obama; and

11

WHEREAS, Although it first looked as though Sgt. Durkin would

12

survive his injuries, doctors became worried about his prognosis

13

when he developed a postsurgical fungal infection, and it was

14

that infection which took his life on April 9, 2010, with his

15

mother by his bedside; and

16

WHEREAS, Sgt. Durkin was 24 years of age at the time of his

17

death; and

18

WHEREAS, As a young boy growing up on Easton's South Side, he

19

often played war games, wrote about military topics when given

20

writing assignments in school and loved building model ships and

21

planes, and those who knew him said he was destined to become a

22

soldier; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Durkin will be buried with his father, a

24

Vietnam veteran who died in 1992, in Hays Cemetery in Easton;

25

and

26

WHEREAS, St. Durkin is survived by his mother, Mary Ann; his

27

sister, Megan Rowlands; and two nephews; and

28

WHEREAS, It is fitting for the courageous and valiant service

29

of this soldier, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service

30

of his nation, to be honored by the citizens of this

Commonwealth; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of

3

United States Army Sergeant Sean Michael Durkin, 24, who paid

4

the ultimate sacrifice on April 9, 2010, as the result of

5

injuries he received from an improvised explosive device on

6

March 27, 2010, in Afghanistan.
