        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           AUGUST 16, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the French and Indian War
     2     and honoring the heroism of George Washington and his
     3     soldiers, who fought and some of whom gave their lives
     4     defending English claims in the middle colonies between 1754
     5     and 1760.

     6     WHEREAS, The French and Indian War put America on its future
     7  course, mobilizing forces and events which culminated in the War
     8  for Independence; and
     9     WHEREAS, The French and Indian War was fought in Pennsylvania
    10  from 1754 through 1760 as France, Great Britain and its colonies
    11  and Native Americans battled for control of the colonies; and
    12     WHEREAS, A contested area at the confluence of the Allegheny,
    13  Monongahela and Ohio Rivers, the present site of the City of

     1  Pittsburgh, provided valuable access to the western frontier;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, George Washington, a young officer in the Virginia
     4  militia, earned recognition for his service and leadership
     5  during the French and Indian War and attained the rank of
     6  brigade commander in 1758; and
     7     WHEREAS, Under the Treaty of Paris of 1763, the French Empire
     8  in North America was virtually destroyed; and
     9     WHEREAS, British colonists secured the frontier for western
    10  expansion, Native American populations were displaced and
    11  opposition to colonial policy was taking root; and
    12     WHEREAS, It is fitting to remember the resolve and sacrifice
    13  of the citizen soldiers and colonial armies whose hard-won
    14  victories shaped the New World; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
    16  heroism of George Washington and his soldiers on the occasion of
    17  the 250th anniversary of the French and Indian War.
