        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 26, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring Choconut Township, Susquehanna County, in recognition
     2     of its bicentennial celebration on October 8, 2006.

     3     WHEREAS, Choconut Township in Susquehanna County was first
     4  settled by non-Native Americans in 1806; and
     5     WHEREAS, The settlement was so named because of its location
     6  along the Choconut Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, Choconut Township was originally settled by Native
     9  Americans--the Nanticokes, Delaware, Iroquois, Conoy and
    10  Shawnee--but this settlement was routed during the Revolutionary
    11  War; and


     1     WHEREAS, The name of Choconut Creek and later of Choconut
     2  Township is thought to derive from the Nanticoke word
     3  Tschochnot, meaning "place of tamaracks"; and
     4     WHEREAS, Many of the settlers of Choconut Township were
     5  farmers, and, while farming is no longer prevalent, the area has
     6  kept its rural nature; and
     7     WHEREAS, The 2000 census notes that the population of
     8  Choconut Township is 797 people and consists of 316 households
     9  and 236 families; and
    10     WHEREAS, Choconut Township residents anticipate a jubilant
    11  celebration on October 8, 2006, of the 200th anniversary of the
    12  township's settlement; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Choconut
    14  Township, Susquehanna County, on its bicentennial celebration on
    15  October 8, 2006.
