INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 3, 2006
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating October 12, 2006, as "Lights On Afterschool! Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Nearly 1.8 million school-age children and youths in 4 this Commonwealth return from school to a home where each parent 5 is working outside the home; and 6 WHEREAS, Many of these children are unsupervised for 20 to 25 7 hours per week; and 8 WHEREAS, Afterschool programs provide safe, challenging, 9 engaging and fun learning experiences to help children and 10 youths develop their social, emotional, physical, cultural and 11 academic skills; and 12 WHEREAS, Afterschool programs support working families by 13 ensuring that children are safe and productive after the regular 14 school day ends; and 15 WHEREAS, Afterschool programs build stronger communities by
1 involving students, parents, business leaders and adult 2 volunteers in the lives of young people, thereby promoting 3 positive relationships among children, youths, adults and 4 families; and 5 WHEREAS, Afterschool programs engage families, schools and 6 diverse community partners in advancing the well-being of 7 children; and 8 WHEREAS, "Lights On Afterschool!" a national celebration of 9 afterschool programs on October 12, promotes the critical 10 importance of quality afterschool programs in the lives of 11 children, families and communities; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October 13 12, 2006, as "Lights On Afterschool!
