A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Moraine State Park.
WHEREAS, In 2020, Moraine State Park, located in Butler
County, will celebrate its 50th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The 16,725-acre park is the third largest and one of
the most admired and popular parks in the Pennsylvania State
park system, attracting more than 1 million visitors annually;
and
WHEREAS, Moraine State Park is noted for its many activities,
including its annual regatta, hiking, biking, cross country
skiing, geocaching, horseback riding, fishing, boating and
pontoon boat tours on the 3,225-acre Lake Arthur; and
WHEREAS, The park's name, "Moraine," comes from the term for
the accumulated regolith and rock deposited by glaciers that
extended just to the north of the park in the distant past,
leaving their legacy in the current local landscape of rolling

hills and lakes; and
WHEREAS, Early settlers cleared forests and drained swamps in
the area, using the land for mining sand, gravel and other
resources as well as for extracting coal, natural gas and oil,
eventually leaving the land barren and vulnerable to topsoil
erosion; and
WHEREAS, In 1926, Frank W. Preston, an amateur geologist and
naturalist from England who settled in the area, noted the
influence of glaciation on the landscape and worked with the
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to study and preserve the area;
and
WHEREAS, State Government agencies joined the efforts to
reclaim the land, sealing mines and oil wells and erecting a dam
on Muddy Creek to create Lake Arthur; and
WHEREAS, In 1970, Lake Arthur reached its full level and
Moraine State Park was dedicated and opened to the public on May
23, 1970; and
WHEREAS, Numerous special activities and events will be
featured in 2020 to mark 50 years of the park serving the
recreational needs of the public; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
50th anniversary of Moraine State Park; and be it further
RESOLVED, That all residents of Pennsylvania be encouraged to
visit the park to enjoy its natural beauty and engage in
healthful outdoor recreation with their family and friends.
