A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the week of October 5 through 11, 2008, as "National 2 Newspaper Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Our nation's founders recognized, in their vision, 4 that a democracy depends upon the convictions and actions of an 5 informed public, and that its citizens must have access to the 6 most complete and accurate information about their community, 7 their nation and the world; and 8 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the birthplace 9 of our nation's independence, and the freedom enjoyed by the 10 people of the United States, supported by the right to free 11 speech and a free press, are treasured principles upon which 12 America thrives; and 13 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's newspapers have evolved through the 14 centuries to meet the increasing needs and challenges of a
1 diverse population to reflect the highest standards of 2 journalism and public service, accuracy and fairness; and 3 WHEREAS, Since 1940, the United States Newspaper Association 4 managers have sponsored and supported "National Newspaper Week," 5 a week-long celebration emphasizing the importance of newspapers 6 in fostering improved community service, participation and 7 responsiveness in the everyday lives of citizens; therefore be 8 it 9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 10 week of October 5 through 11, 2008, as "National Newspaper Week" 11 in Pennsylvania; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge the 13 vital role played by the newspaper industry as a pillar of our 14 democracy and congratulate the Pennsylvania Newspaper 15 Association and its membership and affiliates upon their 16 celebration of "National Newspaper Week" and for their role in 17 encouraging an active citizenry and an informed public; and be 18 it further 19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 20 the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association.
