        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           NOVEMBER 15, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of January 2007 as "Radon Action Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Exposure to radon poses significant health risks and
     4  is considered to be the second leading cause of lung cancer next
     5  to smoking; and
     6     WHEREAS, Smoking combined with elevated indoor radon levels
     7  is an especially serious health risk; and
     8     WHEREAS, An estimated 40% of homes in this Commonwealth have
     9  radon levels greater than the national guideline of 4.0
    10  picocuries per liter annual average; and
    11     WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, 49 of the 67 counties have
    12  predicted average indoor radon levels greater than 4.0
    13  picocuries per liter; and


     1     WHEREAS, As part of the Environmental Protection Agency's
     2  2006 State Indoor Radon Grant (SIRG) program, the Department of
     3  Environmental Protection is conducting a public awareness
     4  campaign in connection with "National Radon Action Month"; and
     5     WHEREAS, Under the SIRG program the Department of
     6  Environmental Protection awards various Radon Awareness Grants
     7  for projects to increase public and professional awareness about
     8  health risks associated with radon exposure and the need for
     9  increased testing and mitigation; and
    10     WHEREAS, Grant recipients have included the American Lung
    11  Association of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Association of
    12  Broadcasters, the Eastern Regional Radon Training Center and
    13  Central Penn Parent; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    15  month of January 2007 as "Radon Action Month" in Pennsylvania.
