                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 1 (General Provisions) of the Pennsylvania
     2     Consolidated Statutes, further defining the term "physician";
     3     and making editorial changes.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  The definition of "physician" in section 1991 of
     7  Title 1 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes is amended to
     8  read:
     9  § 1991.  Definitions.
    10     The following words and phrases, when used in any statute
    11  finally enacted on or after September 1, 1937, unless the
    12  context clearly indicates otherwise, shall have the meanings
    13  ascribed to them in this section:
    14     * * *
    15     "Physician."
    16         (1)  When used in any statute finally enacted on or
    17     before April 6, 1951, an individual licensed under the laws


     1     of this Commonwealth to engage in the practice of medicine
     2     and surgery in any or all of its branches;
     3         (2)  when used in any statute finally enacted on or after
     4     April 7, 1951 and on or before June 14, 1957, an individual
     5     licensed under the laws of this Commonwealth to engage in the
     6     practice of medicine and surgery in any or in all of its
     7     branches within the scope of the act of June 3, 1911
     8     (P.L.639, No.246) relating to medicine and surgery and its
     9     amendments, or in the practice of osteopathy or osteopathic
    10     surgery within the scope of the act of March 19, 1909
    11     (P.L.46, No.29) and its amendments; and
    12         (3)  when used in any statute finally enacted on or after
    13     June 15, 1957, an individual licensed under the laws of this
    14     Commonwealth to engage in the practice of medicine and
    15     surgery in all of its branches within the scope of the act of
    16     June 3, 1911 (P.L.639, No.246) relating to medicine and
    17     surgery and its amendments, or the act of July 20, 1974
    18     (P.L.551, No.190), known as the Medical Practice Act of 1974,
    19     or in the practice of osteopathy or osteopathic surgery
    20     within the scope of the act of March 19, 1909 (P.L.46, No.29)
    21     and its amendments, or the act of October 5, 1978 (P.L.1109,
    22     No.261), known as the Osteopathic Medical Practice Act, or in
    23     the practice of podiatric medicine or podiatric surgery
    24     within the scope of the act of March 2, 1956 (1955 P.L.1206,
    25     No.375), known as the Podiatry Act of 1956. With respect to
    26     the practice of podiatric medicine or podiatric surgery, this
    27     paragraph shall not enlarge or diminish the rights given to
    28     and obligations required of doctors of podiatric medicine as
    29     set forth in the Podiatry Act of 1956. Any person authorized
    30     to practice podiatry may use the title "physician" or

     1     "surgeon" when such title is qualified by words showing that
     2     the podiatrist is a physician or surgeon of the foot.
