| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life and legacy of Mr. Peter Stern, poet, inventor |
2 | and successful businessman; and extending condolences to his |
3 | family, friends and colleagues. |
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Peter Stern of Cheltenham Township, Montgomery |
5 | County, who was known as "Mister Library" to many, passed away |
6 | peacefully at home on October 1, 2012, at 91 years of age; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern spent most of his life in the Philadelphia |
8 | area; and |
9 | WHEREAS, He graduated from the Oak Lane Country Day School |
10 | and later, in 1943, from Johns Hopkins University; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern also courageously served his country in |
12 | the United States Army during World War II; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In 1957, Mr. Stern founded the Elkins Park Free |
14 | Library and, in doing so, formed the Cheltenham Township Library |
15 | System; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern served as president of the Elkins Park |

1 | Free Library from 1962 to 1964 and president of the Cheltenham |
2 | Township Library Board from 1964 to 1968, and he chaired the |
3 | fund drive for the new Elkins Park Library in 1980; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern invented Checkpoint, an electronic system |
5 | used to prevent the theft of library books and retail |
6 | shoplifting, and, in 1967, founded Checkpoint Systems, Inc., a |
7 | worldwide firm that manufactures and installs surveillance, bar |
8 | code labeling and methods improvement systems; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern was active in the cultural improvement of |
10 | Cheltenham Township and served on the Board of Governors of |
11 | Cheltenham Center for the Arts from 1970 to 1996, during which |
12 | time he served as the board's president in 1984; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern wrote and published the children's book |
14 | "Gifford the Giraffe," which is a collection of stories he told |
15 | to his grandchildren, and published other works; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern, a true asset to Cheltenham Township, was |
17 | a beloved husband, father, poet, inventor and successful |
18 | businessman who was passionate about grassroots politics; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, |
20 | Andrew and Steven; step-children, Laurie, Wendy, Tracy, Thomas, |
21 | Robert and Jennifer; and 17 grandchildren; and |
22 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern will be missed by his family, friends and |
23 | the many residents of Cheltenham Township; and |
24 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stern's legacy will live on as the Cheltenham |
25 | Township Public Library System is enjoyed by citizens for |
26 | generations to come; therefore be it |
27 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its |
28 | profound sorrow over the passing of Mr. Peter Stern and extend |
29 | its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and innumerable |
30 | colleagues; and be it further |

2 | the family of Mr. Peter Stern. |
