A RESOLUTION

Recognizing December 12, 2012, as the 225th anniversary of

2

Pennsylvania's statehood.

3

WHEREAS, Before this Commonwealth was settled by Europeans,

4

the area was home to the Delaware, Susquehannock, Iroquois,

5

Eriez, Shawnee and other American Indian Nations; and

6

WHEREAS, The Dutch and the English claimed both sides of the

7

Delaware River as part of their colonial lands in America, with

8

the Dutch being the first to take possession and having an

9

impact on the history of Pennsylvania; and

10

WHEREAS, On September 12, 1672, as part of the Third Anglo-

11

Dutch War, the Dutch reconquered New York Colony/New Amsterdam

12

and established three county courts which went on to become

13

original Counties in present day Delaware and Pennsylvania; and

14

WHEREAS, The one that later transferred to Pennsylvania was

15

Upland and partitioned on November 12, 1674, producing the

16

general outline of the current border between Pennsylvania and

17

Delaware; and

18

WHEREAS, On February 28, 1681, King Charles II granted one of

the largest land grants, called Pennsylvania, to William Penn in

2

order to repay a debt; and 

3

WHEREAS, William Penn signed a peace treaty with Tammany,

4

leader of the Delaware tribe, beginning a long period of

5

friendly relations between the Quakers and the Indians; and

6

WHEREAS, After the Stamp Act Congress of 1765, Delegate John

7

Dickinson of Philadelphia wrote the Declaration of Rights and

8

Grievances; and

9

WHEREAS, The Congress was the first meeting of the 13

10

colonies, called at the request of the Massachusetts Assembly,

11

but only nine colonies sent delegates; and

12

WHEREAS, When the Founding Fathers of the United States

13

convened in Philadelphia in 1774, 12 colonies sent

14

representatives to the First Continental Congress; and 

15

WHEREAS, The Second Continental Congress, which also met in

16

Philadelphia in 1775, drew up and signed the Declaration of

17

Independence in Philadelphia, and

18

WHEREAS, When Philadelphia was captured by the British, the

19

Continental Congress escaped westward, meeting in Lancaster in

20

September 1777, then to York where they drew up the Articles of

21

Confederation that formed 13 independent colonies into a new

22

nation, and later, the Constitution was written and signed in

23

Philadelphia; and

24

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the

25

Constitution of the United States on December 12, 1787;

26

therefore be it

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize

28

December 12, 2012, as the 225th anniversary of Pennsylvania's

29

statehood.
