A RESOLUTION

 

1Commemorating the life of Arthur L. Powell for his long-standing
2economic and philanthropic contributions to this
3Commonwealth.

4WHEREAS, Arthur L. Powell has been affectionately referred to
5as "the soul of King of Prussia" and was well known for his
6humble and gracious approach to public service; and

7WHEREAS, Mr. Powell founded the original Kravco company in
8the 1940s and accumulated more than 60 years of experience in
9the real estate development and management industry in
10Pennsylvania; and

11WHEREAS, Mr. Powell and his partners in Kravco were pioneers
12in the development of suburban regional malls, which has a
13profound impact on how we shop today; and

14WHEREAS, His company has over 70 years of experience
15developing, managing and leasing commercial properties and has
16managed, leased, developed and redeveloped over 30 million
17square feet of commercial real estate; and

1WHEREAS, One of Kravco's crowning achievement was its
2creation of the King of Prussia Mall, one of the country's
3largest and most successful mall development project started in
41963; and

5WHEREAS, Mr. Powell was a 1943 graduate of Alfred University,
6receiving a degree in ceramic engineering and earned his
7master's degree in industrial engineering from New York
8University in 1949; and

9WHEREAS, Mr. Powell was elected to the Alfred University
10board of trustees in 1980, serving as the board's chairman and
11received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 1995; and

12WHEREAS, Mr. Powell served in the Unites States Air Force
13while attending the Aircraft Engineering School at Yale
14University; and

15WHEREAS, Mr. Powell supported high school and college
16scholarships, including those for the George School in Bucks
17County and schools in Upper Merion; and

18WHEREAS, Mr. Powell served as vice chairman of Montgomery
19Hospital, where he was instrumental in establishing the neonatal
20unit at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery and was president of
21the King of Prussia Rotary Club, where he was known for his
22life-long support of the rotary's charitable arm, the Gundaker
23Foundation; and

24WHEREAS, Mr. Powell was a founding member of the Wharton Real
25Estate Center, was committed to the mission of the ALS
26Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter, was a founder of the
27Museum of the American Revolution in Valley Forge and was named
28a Distinguished Citizen by the Boy Scouts Colonial District; and

29WHEREAS, Along with his late wife Lea, the Powells were
30generous donors, being charter members of the Society of

1Benefactors at Alfred University for gifts exceeding more than
2one million dollars; and

3WHEREAS, In 1994, Alfred University created the Lea R. Powell
4Institute for Children and Family Services with a renovated
5facility, including a 5,000-square-foot addition that was
6dedicated in October 2002; therefore be it

7RESOLVED, The Pennsylvania House of Representatives honor the
8life of Arthur L. Powell for his long-standing economic and
9philanthropic contributions to this Commonwealth.
