WHEREAS, Penn State has the largest Military Appreciation
celebration of its kind in the Big 10 Conference; and
WHEREAS, While Penn State regularly offers multiple programs
of support, resources and wide-ranging recognition to our
military personnel, it also dedicates two weeks in the fall to
our service men and women; and
WHEREAS, Today, more than 5,600 Penn State students have
direct military ties as active-duty service members, reservists,
veterans or military dependents, across all of Penn State's
campuses, including Penn State World Campus; and
WHEREAS, Penn State has consistently been recognized as a
military-friendly school for the many academic programs and
support resources available to active duty, veteran and Reserve
Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) students; and
WHEREAS, For veteran students at every Penn State campus and
online through the World Campus, Penn State offers peer
counseling services and assists with VA benefits, the college
application process, financial aid and living arrangements
through the Office of Veterans Programs; and
WHEREAS, As part of its mission, Penn State has offered
training in military studies since its founding in 1855; and
WHEREAS, The GI Bill helped boost enrollments at Penn State
following World War II; and
WHEREAS, ROTC participation at Penn State was mandatory for
male students until 1962; and
WHEREAS, This year's Military Appreciation theme recognizes
100 years of women officially serving in the United States Armed
Forces since World War I; and
WHEREAS, At Penn State, women have a rich military history,
from training as aeronautical engineers during World War II to
