AN ACT

Designating the apple as the official snack food of this

2

Commonwealth.

WHEREAS, Healthy snacks are a great way to satisfy hunger and

4

maintain energy in between meals; and

5

WHEREAS, Apples are a great-tasting snack rich in dietary

6

fiber and free of fat, cholesterol and sodium; and

7

WHEREAS, Choosing to snack on an apple gives the body a

8

number of important nutrients, including vitamins A, B1, B2, C

9

and niacin, as well as iron and potassium; and

10

WHEREAS, The antioxidants and flavonoids in apples have been

11

proven to reduce the risk of heart disease and improve lung

12

health; and

13

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania ranks fourth nationally in apple

14

production, growing 467 million pounds of apples each year

15

valued at nearly $60 million; and

16

WHEREAS, The apple industry is a key element of Pennsylvania

agriculture.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

3

hereby enacts as follows:

4

Section 1.  Designation of the official snack food of this

5

Commonwealth.

The apple is designated as the official snack food of this

7

Commonwealth.

8

Section 2.  Effective date.

9

This act shall take effect immediately.
