AN ACT
1 Amending Title 42 (Judiciary and Judicial Procedure) of the
2 Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, further providing for
3 compensation of and travel allowance for jurors.
4 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
5 hereby enacts as follows:
6 Section 1. Section 4561 of Title 42 of the Pennsylvania
7 Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:
8 § 4561. Compensation of and travel allowance for jurors.
9 (a) Compensation.--[A]
10 (1) Except as otherwise provided for in paragraph (2), a
11 person summoned to serve as a juror shall receive
12 compensation at the rate of $9 a day for the first three days
13 in any calendar year he shall be required to report for
14 service and $25 a day for each day thereafter in such
15 calendar year that such person is required to report. In
16 addition, persons so summoned shall be paid a travel
1 allowance at the rate of 17c/ per mile circular except that 2 no travel allowance shall be paid in the first judicial 3 district. 4 (2) A person summoned to serve as a juror for a 5 multicounty investigating grand jury shall receive 6 compensation at the rate of $40 a day for each day in any 7 calendar year in which he is required to report for service. 8 In addition, persons so summoned shall be paid a travel and 9 expense allowance at the same rate and for the same expense 10 types that an employee of the Commonwealth who is subject to 11 the rules and regulations of the Executive Board is entitled 12 to receive when conducting official Commonwealth business. 13 (b) State reimbursement.--The Commonwealth shall reimburse 14 each county 80% of the amount expended by the county for such 15 compensation and travel allowance beyond the first three days of 16 service if the juror is participating in a trial or in grand 17 jury proceedings. Application for reimbursement shall be made by 18 the county to the State Treasurer through the Administrative 19 Office pursuant to procedures prescribed by said office. As used 20 in this section, trial participation shall include voir dire 21 examination only if such examination shall have commenced prior 22 to the juror's fourth day of service. 23 (c) Biennial review by General Assembly.--The General 24 Assembly shall conduct a biennial review of the appropriateness 25 of the amount of compensation and allowances under subsection 26 (a)(2) in order to determine whether any adjustments to the 27 amount should be made. 28 Section 2.
