AN ACT

 

1Designating Whitaker Avenue from its intersection with Roosevelt
2Boulevard in Philadelphia City, Philadelphia County, to the
3point where it meets East Erie Avenue in Philadelphia City,
4Philadelphia County, as the 65th Infantry "Borinqueneers"
5Avenue.

6The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
7hereby enacts as follows:

8Section 1. 65th Infantry "Borinqueneers" Avenue.

9(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
10follows:

11(1) The 65th Infantry Regiment is a Puerto Rican
12regiment of the United States Army. The 65th Infantry
13Regiment participated in World War I, World War II and the
14Korean War.

15(2) "The Borinqueneers" is a nickname for the 65th
16Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Division in the United States
17Army, an all-volunteer Puerto Rican unit. It was derived from
18the name Borinquen meaning "land of the brave lord." It has

1also been interpreted as "land of the pure."

2(3) Over 62,000 Puerto Ricans joined the military during
3World War II and over 43,000 Puerto Ricans served in the
4Korean War. While in Korea, the Borinqueneers served in nine
5separate military campaigns, with hundreds of men giving
6their lives to serve their country.

7(4) The Regiment won four Distinguished Service Crosses
8and 125 Silver Stars and was awarded the Presidential Unit
9Citation and the Greek Gold Metal for Bravery for its
10service.

11(b) Designation.--Whitaker Avenue from its intersection with
12Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia City, Philadelphia County,
13to the point where it meets East Erie Avenue in Philadelphia
14City, Philadelphia County, is designated as the 65th Infantry
15"Borinqueneers" Avenue.

16(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
17maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
18traffic in both directions.

19Section 2. Effective date.

20This act shall take effect immediately.
