                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," providing for flag salutes.

     6     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     7  hereby enacts as follows:
     8     Section 1.  The act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), known
     9  as the Public School Code of 1949, is amended by adding a
    10  section to read:
    11     Section 1320.  Flag Salute.--Every school board shall cause
    12  the United States flag to be displayed in every classroom during
    13  school hours of each school day. Each public school day for
    14  grades one (1) through twelve (12) shall begin with a salute to
    15  the flag followed by the Pledge of Allegiance or the National
    16  Anthem. No pupil may be compelled against the pupil's objections
    17  or those of the pupil's parents or guardian to recite the pledge

     1  or to sing the anthem. A pupil who refrains from participating
     2  shall respect the rights and interests of pupils who wish to
     3  participate.
     4     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
