AN ACT

 

1Designating a bridge on that portion of State Route 2020 over
2Interstate 81 in the Borough of Dunmore, Lackawanna County,
3as the 2nd Lt. Carol Ann Drazba and Vietnam Veterans Memorial
4Bridge.

5The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6hereby enacts as follows:

7Section 1.  2nd Lt. Carol Ann Drazba and Vietnam Veterans
8Memorial Bridge.

9(a)  Findings.--

10(1)  Carol Ann Drazba was born in Dunmore, Pennsylvania,
11on December 23, 1943.

12(2)  Carol Ann Drazba graduated from Dunmore High School
13in 1961. After high school she decided to attend nursing
14school. During her second year at nursing school she joined
15the Army.

16(3)  2nd Lt. Carol Ann Drazba completed her basic

1training at Ft. Sam Houston. She was then assigned to Ft.
2Huachucha in Arizona.

3(4)  As the war in Vietnam was escalating and the need
4for medical personnel grew momentously, 2nd Lt. Drazba
5volunteered for service in Vietnam.

6(5)  2nd Lt. Drazba arrived in Vietnam in November of
71965 and was assigned to the 3rd Field Hospital near Saigon.

8(6) After weeks of endless hours in the surgical ward,
92nd Lt. Drazba received a weekend pass for rest and
10recuperation (R and R). On her way for R and R the helicopter
11she was being transported in crashed.

12(7)  2nd Lt. Carol Ann Drazba died February 18, 1966. She
13was the first American female to be killed in action during
14the Vietnam War. At the time of her death, 2nd Lt. Drazba had
15a reputation as an excellent operating nurse in the Army.

16(b)  Designation.--The bridge located on State Route 2020
17over Interstate 81 in the Borough of Dunmore, Lackawanna County,
18is hereby designated as the 2nd Lt. Carol Ann Drazba and Vietnam
19Veterans Memorial Bridge.

20(c)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
21maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
22traffic in both directions on the bridge.

23Section 2.  Effective date.

24This act shall take effect in 60 days.
