AN ACT 1 Designating the portion of SR 6 between its intersection with SR 2 107 in Wyoming County to La Plume in Lackawanna County as the 3 "Big Six" Christy Mathewson Memorial Highway. 4 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 5 hereby enacts as follows: 6 Section 1. Findings. 7 Christy Mathewson, the legendary pitcher of the New York 8 Giants, was born August 12, 1880, in Factoryville, Pennsylvania. 9 He attended Factoryville grammar school and later enrolled at 10 the Keystone Academy (now Keystone College) where he pitched, 11 played second base and captained the baseball team, as well as 12 excelling in football, the classics and debate. Upon graduation 13 from Keystone in 1898, he entered Bucknell University where he 14 remained active in baseball, football and basketball and served 15 as president of the junior class and as the head of two literary 16 societies. He served abroad as a captain in the United States 17 Army in World War I, where he was exposed to mustard gas which 18 contributed to a long illness from tuberculosis and his untimely
1 death in 1925. Known as baseball's "Big Six," after the champion 2 of all New York City fire companies, Christy Mathewson was the 3 winning pitcher of 373 major league games, the winner of 30 or 4 more games in four seasons and 20 or more games in 14 seasons, 5 and one of baseball's "Five Immortals" elected to the Baseball 6 Hall of Fame at its founding in 1936. "Big Six" Christy 7 Mathewson's place as a baseball legend is assured. 8 Section 2. Designation. 9 The portion of SR 6 between its intersection with SR 107 in 10 Wyoming County to La Plume in Lackawanna County is hereby 11 designated as the "Big Six" Christy Mathewson Memorial Highway. 12 Section 3. Signing. 13 The Department of Transportation shall erect appropriate 14 signs to indicate this designation. 15 Section 4. Repeals. 16 All acts and parts of acts are repealed insofar as they are 17 inconsistent with this act. 18 Section 5. Effective Date. 19 This act shall take effect in 60 days.
